What do satellite mega-constellations, global internet connectivity, and data centres have in common?

They all face the same challenge: 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗱𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗺𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗮𝗺𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝗮𝘀 𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗰𝗸𝗹𝘆 𝗮𝘀 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗻𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗹𝘆 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴?

A new study led by FCP researchers from the Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) introduces 𝗢𝗣𝗦𝗦 (𝗢𝗻𝗲-𝗣𝗮𝘀𝘀 & 𝗦𝗺𝗮𝗿𝘁-𝗦𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵), a novel algorithm designed to dramatically speed up data delivery in time-varying networks.

Satellite networks such as Starlink are made up of thousands of satellites moving rapidly around the Earth. Connections between satellites appear and disappear continuously, making efficient data routing a highly complex challenge. Instead of repeatedly recalculating routes from scratch, OPSS intelligently reuses previous computations and focuses only on the most promising network paths.

The result?
• Up to 38× faster than current state-of-the-art approaches.
• Solves large-scale satellite routing problems in just seconds.
• Demonstrates strong scalability on real-world constellation models.

Beyond satellite communications, the ideas behind OPSS could help optimise data movement across future 6G systems, cloud infrastructures, and other large-scale dynamic networks.
