Connected Smart Mobility (COSMO) Testbed at NTU

The NTU COSMO testbed provides a comprehensive suite of technologies, solutions, and best-of-breed V2X mobility use cases that enhance road safety, optimize traffic and support future smart mobility solutions globally as well as to realize Singapore’s Smart Mobility Vision 2030.

The testbed further aims to build a strong research and engineering manpower base that can sustain the human capital needs and support the ecosystem by anchoring industry players to conduct R&D, product development and manufacturing in Singapore.

What it offers

The NTU COSMO testbed resources include V2X resources (operating at 5.9GHz) and Cellular resources (operating at 3.5GHz). The cellular infrastructure in the testbed include 3 sectors of 5G standalone-mode gNodeB base stations that provide Uu-link communication in NTU. A 5G private network is configured to allow dedicated 2-way communication between the COSMO operation centre and the remote 5G devices.


Leveraging on existing COSMO outdoor infrastructure, the NTU COSMO team has developed and tested 15 vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and 22 vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) use cases based on DSRC technology in the past 7 years. Some of V2I use cases are re-encoded into cellular V2N use cases after the 5G-V2X network is established. The focus of these use cases is to provide public safety services among vehicles, and between vehicle and pedestrians. Some other use cases focus more on the traffic manager and information sharing services. Enhanced from standard DSRC technology, one last but special category of use cases is to provide the seamless IP services to the vehicles.

The NTU COSMO team has also developed a COSMO ITS Runtime middleware to facilitate the radio hardware makers and the application software developers to develop ITS (intelligent transportation system) apps. The COSMO ITS Runtime middleware is designed to support both apps and radios as dynamic plugins, i.e. apps and radios are loaded and managed by COSMO ITS Runtime middleware. The apps can choose different radio(s) to transmit when there are more than one radio modules available. Major components and functionalities of COSMO ITS Runtime middleware are listed below.

• To centrally manage hardware and OS resources on the device.
• To facilitate a central event bus for apps to communicate with the external software entities, be it OS, apps or runtime operating system.
• To facilitate a unified message queue for apps to send/receive V2X messages.
• To facilitate the IEEE 1609.4, IEEE 1609.3, SAE J2735 V2X protocol stacks for US standards.
• Currently the COSMO ITS Runtime middleware supports interworking with the Quectel C-V2X module (Qualcomm® 9150) and Cohda Wireless MK5 module (NXP RoadLink™).
